Cooking
Single oven
A single oven has one cooking cavity which may include the grill. These items can usually be built into the kitchen furniture at eye level or under the worktop depending on the applience.
Double oven
A double oven has two cooking cavities and can be built into the kitchen at eye level or under the worktop depending on the item. Both ovens are then able to cook food as opposed to a single oven appliance which only has an accompanying grill.
Fan oven
A fan oven circulates the warm air all around the oven by use of a fan. This therefore allows the cooking time to be reduced and food to be cooked more evenly.
Conventional oven
A conventional oven is hotter at the top than at the bottom, allowing you to use the top for food which can be cooked quickly while using the bottom for food which need to be cooked more slowly giving you the choice when you cook.
Multifunction oven
A multifunction oven has the option of a fan to heat the oven or the conventional warming method. This gives you more versatile cooking options.
Built-in oven
A built-in oven is an oven which is built into your kitchen at eye level for convenience of use.
Built-under oven
A built under oven is an oven which is built under your worktop. This allows you to have the hob immediately above, thus saving space.
Hobs / Hoods
Induction
An induction hob uses a strong electro magnet (the induction coil) which is positioned below the ceramic cooking zones on the hob. This then transfers the heat to the pan placed onto the hob while the hob itself does not get hot.
Ceramic
A ceramic hob uses radiant heat from under the glass of the hob.
Halogen
A halogen hob uses light to heat the hob plates and is also backed up with radiant heat.
Hoods
Cooker hoods extract fumes and smells out of the kitchen using ducting or by recirculation the air using filters.
Chimney
A chimney hood is fitted into your kitchen above your cooker and is a visible feature.
Canopy
A canopy hood is placed into an artificial chimney.
Microwaves
Built in
These are built into a tall cabinet in your kitchen.
Built under
These appliances simply slot into a gap and don't have any cabinet carcus surrounding them; the door then hangs on the fridge.
Dishwashers
Fully integrated
A dishwasher which is totally covered with full height cabinet door and the controls are on the top edge of the appliance.
Semi integrated
A dishwasher which takes a drawer line door and the control panel can be seen.
Other
Built-In / Integrated / Integral
A product which is designed to fix inside a unit. There are different versions of this including semi-integrated where it is built into the units and is covered by a 3/4 door which covers all of the unit apart from the control panel, Fully-Integrated where the product is built into the units but is completely covered by a door, Built-Under where the appliance is built under your worktop. Integral is simply another word for Integrated.
